The platform offers 28 different national visa categories for applicants. People can now apply online for citizenship and residency permits in major cities like Berlin, Hamburg, and Bavaria. As of January 1, 2025, all 167 German visa offices worldwide have access to this digital system.

Foreign Minister Baerbock praised the changes, stating they were “long overdue.” She highlighted Germany’s shortage of skilled workers, saying, “Germany is short of at least 400,000 skilled workers every year.” Baerbock emphasized that the new system will help boost Germany’s economy by attracting skilled professionals, students, and tourists.
She criticized the old paper-based system for discouraging applicants, adding, “We can’t afford to lose talented individuals because of long forms and waiting periods.” The Foreign Minister underlined the need for a modern, digital, and secure visa process, recognizing Germany as a key destination for immigrants.

This step includes identity verification, document validation, and biometric data collection (fingerprints and photographs).
